We started off early this time, getting breakfast before heading into the mountainous regions of North Carolina. I have written about Touring Joara on many occasions; it’s an annual event known for its historical significance and beauty, and my grandfather and I try hard not to miss it. Two other members of our car club felt the same, and in total the Catawba Valley British Motors Club was represented by four members on the early October day.
There’s something utterly spiritual about the autumn road rally. As you rise in altitude, the leaves slowly change colors like a sort of magic is occurring. The appeal of only having the curve in front of you, with maybe an antique Datsun in view is unparalleled. We took the 103 mile stretch with around 100 other cars, passing attractions such as the Brown Mountain overlook, Lake James, Little Switzerland, and a history buff’s favorite, the Museum of North Carolina Minerals. Wherever you turned, you were bound to find something.
The tour raises funds for the Exploring Joara Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating on archaeology and anthropology through school visits, summer camps, and outreach programs. Joara was once a major Native American town, which mysteriously disappeared between the settlement of the Spanish explorers and the English debtors of the 15 and 1600s. The tour is held near the Berry site, where they are excavating the Joaran remains.
Our destination paralleled the beauty of the journey; arguably some of the best barbecue was situated at the quaint winery, and a lone singer set the wistful mood of the event. Interest was kept with activities like the poker run, which won us the prize of an educational book on the Mississippian region. It was also a great place to connect, as I found several contacts to help me in my artistic pursuits.
Rallies can appeal to anyone. Whether you are looking to explore local scenery, connect to like-minded car enthusiasts, or simply enjoy the learning opportunities, I implore you to explore events in your local area. Not only are they enriching, but they often raise money for important causes in the community. This particular road rally occurs annually in Morganton, NC, and you can discover more about its cause at exploringjoara.org.
